Pasärea Mäiasträ / The Enchanted Bird
— Contemporary Rumanian Music for Clarinet and Viola —
In recent years, interest in Rumanian composers has been constantly on the increase in western Europe. The peculiar historical background of this cultural area has given rise to an individual and highly varied tradition of contemporary music that has prompted both fascination and astonishment among foreign observers. Despite the country's partially enforced isolation from the rest of the world, Rumania's musicians have never lost sight of current developments in composition. All the same, their distance from these developments has prevented kept them from pursuing a number of dead ends. Rumania's living musical traditions, both in its countryside and in the Orthodox church, have inspired its composers to produce new techniques and structures in their music. Since time immemorial Rumania has stood at the crossroads between East and West. In this way it became a melting pot for a very broad array of influences. One characteristic feature of contemporary Rumanian music is the manner in which it bridges the country's sometimes archaic folk music and an avant-garde idiom. Among the many peculiarities of its musical styles is their readily perceptible inner strength and coherence. Perhaps one of their key features is a distinct manner of dealing with time, in which Rumanian composers seem to move with greater freedom and lack of constraint than their western colleagues.
Practically all the works included on this compact disc were written in the last few years and dedicated to the performers appearing on our recording. This is perhaps a stroke of luck, for it is not often that one finds performers who possess not only a solid technique, brilliant tone and subtle aural imagination, but also a deep intrinsic understanding of the music they play.

Violeta Dinescu (b. Bucharest, 1953)
Dinescu studied at Bucharest Conservatory (with Myriam Marbe composition), where she took degrees in composition, piano and music education in 1977. After teaching at the George Enescu School of Music in Bucharest she immigrated to West Germany in 1982. Since then she has taught music theory at the church music conservatories in Heidelberg and Bayreuth and at the Frankfurt Musikhochschule. In 1996 she was appointed professor of applied composition at the University of Oldenburg. She has received many prizes and awards for her music.
Euraculos II, for clarinet and viola, was inspired by a poem by Ion Caraion. Rather than deriving from the poem, however, the title is the name of an imaginary mythological figure. The music attempts to fill in the space between the lines. Thus, both instruments appear to exist in separate worlds of sound that continually overlap and assimilate each other. Without explicitly quoting Rumanian folk music, the broad arches of melody convey the impression of a „doina", a Rumanian song form that unfolds freely in time.
Dan Dediu (b. Braila, 1967)
Dediu studied at Bucharest Conservatory from 1985-89 in the classes of Stefan Niculescu and Dan Constantinescu. After taking his degree in 1989, he continued his studies at the Musikhochschule in Vienna, where he also studied philosophy. Since 1991 he has taught composition and analysis at Bucharest Conservatory. He has also held a visiting lectureship at Queen's University in Belfast.
Sepia Girl (1994), for clarinet and viola, is based on contrasting compositional devices and makes use of, among other things, microtonality, tempipolyphony and Dediu's own system of notation, in which even the bowing and the breathing of the performers are precisely defined. Despite its rigorous workmanship the piece conveys a sense of freedom. With a minimum of means, it evokes a continuous but unrealized melody captured time and again in moments of heterophony. The title alludes to a state of mind dominated by nostalgia and melancholy.
Aurel Stroe (b. Bucharest, 1932)
After studying composition and musicology at Bucharest Conservatory, Stroe taught orchestration from 1962-75 and was appointed professor of composition in 1974. He took part in the Darmstadt Holiday Courses and visited the United States in 1968 at the invitation of the State Department. He worked in various electronic and computer music studios and received a German Academic Exchange Fellowship in 1972-73. In 1985-86 he was a visiting professor at Illinois State University at Champaign-Urbana; he also held composition seminars at the Darmstadt Holiday Courses from 1986 to 1994. Since 1986 he has been a freelance composer living in Mannheim.
Auf dem Weg zu Hohenfeuern („En Route to Celestial Fires"), for unaccompanied viola, was written in 1979. It is a nocturne that thrives on the fascination exerted when one slowly approaches „celestial fires" flickering in the distance. This impression is obtained through the use of non-transposable scales. In one single motion, the piece traverses the full ambitus of the instrument from low to high register. Timbral „deviations" transform the viola into a „bucium", a Rumanian version of the Swiss alphorn.
Mihnea Brumariu (b. Timisoara, 1958)
After studying composition with Aurel Stroe at Bucharest Conservatory, where he took his degree in 1982, Brumariu continued his studies in England (P. Patterson), France (I. Xenakis) and Poland (Z. Krauze). He teaches musical semantics and composition for film and stage at the High School of Theater and Cinema in Bucharest.
On y va, five pieces for clarinet and viola. These pieces are designed to articulate an imaginary folk music, and attempt to create a continuous realm of acoustical space undergird by mathematical laws. The result is a miniature drama in which the characters constantly change roles. Myriam Marbe (b. Bucharest, 1931) Marbe studied composition with Mihai Jora and Leon Klepper at Bucharest Conservatory, where she took her degree in 1953 and taught from 1954 to 1988, first as a lecturer and later as professor of harmony, counterpoint and composition. She has received many awards and prizes for her music. She attended the Darmstadt Holiday Courses in 1968, 1969 and 1972, and the Royan Festival in 1971. In 1989-90 she received a working scholarship from the City of Mannheim. Since 1990 she has been a freelance composer living in Haarlem (Netherlands) and Bucharest. Paos (1995), for clarinet and viola, is one of the pieces Marbe wrote at a time when she was concerned with expressing tenderness in her music. Generally, her works are noted for richness and intricacy despite their overt simplicity and reduced means. She is often able to obtain a perfect synthesis of originally heterogeneous elements. In Paos, the search for a simple melody is conducted by means of a rhythmic elaboration of a single pitch, revealing distinct allusions to Arabic percussion playing, and by a chorale.
Tiberiu Olah (b. Arpasel, Bihor, 1928)
Olah studied composition at Cluj Conservatory (1946-9) and at Moscow Conservatory with Evgheni Messner (1949-54). In 1966 he studied electronic music in Munich. He attended the Darmstadt Holiday Courses from 1966 to 1971 and received a German Academic Exchange Fellowship to West Berlin in 1978. From 1954 to 1989 he was professor of composition at Bucharest Conservatory. Olah has won many prizes, including two from the Koussevitzky Foundation (New York).
Pasarea Maiastra II („The Enchanted Bird"), for clarinet and electronic tape, is subtitled „Rhymes for the Revelation of Time". It forms part of several cycles inspired by the works of the Rumanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi. On one level the sonata is played without accompaniment. A second layer of sound presents four truncated overlays of the same sonata. These superpositions give rise to a new acoustical space which seems to transcend its own confines.
Anatol Vieru (b. 1926, Iagi)
Vieru studied composition with Leon Klepper at Bucharest Conservatory (1946-51) and with Aram Khachaturian in Moscow (1951-54), where he also pursued his doctorate from 1955-8. From 1955 to 1986 he was professor of composition at Bucharest Conservatory. He received a German Academic Exchange Fellowship to West Berlin in 1973 and was composer-in-residence at New York University in 1992-3. For his musicological work Vieru received an honorary doctorate from Bucharest University. He has also received numerous international awards.
Couple (1995), for clarinet and viola, is taken from a recent series of short duos for various instrumental settings. This piece arose from the sheer joy of composing. It works with finely wrought microtonal sound-surfaces which are constantly pierced by synchronized bursts of sound.
Cornelia Tautu (b. Odorhei, Harghita, 1938)
Tautu attended Bucharest Conservatory, where she studied music education (1960-65) and composition (1963-67). In 1971-72 she took composition lessons from Raoul Pleskow at Long Island University in New York. She is now employed at the Bucharest Institute of Folklore and Dialectology. De Doi (1994), for viola and clarinet, works with sheets of figuration that constantly transmute into gentle undulating movements. Influenced by minimal music, this piece continually reveals clear tonal centers. Although completely original, the music abounds in allusions to the traditional music of Romania.

The Performers
Sanda Ceaciun, (1950) studied at Bucharest Conservatory. She is first violist in the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra and co-founder of the ensemble Consortium Violae. She has made many solo appearances, recordings, and radio and television broadcasts. Since 1994 she has undertaken many tours of western Europe, where she has made recordings for the German broadcasting systems SWF, MDR and DRS.
Aurelian Octav Popa (b. 1937) studied at Bucharest Conservatory and has appeared as a soloist with many famous symphony orchestras in Europe and the USA. He has made numerous radio recordings and has won many international competitions, including those in Prague, Budapest and Geneva. As a conductor, he took part in Sergiu Celebidache's master classes and has been the regular conductor of the Classical Philharmonic in Constanta since 1989. Popa has received numerous awards for his recordings.

Pasärea Mäiasträ / Der verzauberte Vogel
— Zeitgenössische rumänische Musik für Klarinette und Viola —
In den letzten Jahren finden rumänische Komponisten ein zunehmend größerwerdendes Interesse im Westen Europas. Die Besonderheiten, denen dieser Kulturraum ausgesetzt war, führten zu einer eigenständigen und sehr vielfältigen Entwicklung der zeitgenössischen Musik, die mit Faszination und Staunen wahrgenommen wird. Trotz der teilweise erzwungenen Isolation vom übrigen Ausland, verloren die dort beheimateten Komponisten niemals den Überblick über die aktuellen Entwicklungen der komponierten Musik. Die Distanz bewahrte sie aber davor, in einige Sackgassen mitzugehen. Die lebendigen Musiktraditionen Rumäniens, sowohl die Musik der ländlichen Welt, wie auch die der byzantinischen Kirche, wurde für sie zur Inspirationsquelle für neue Techniken und Strukturen in ihrer Musik.
Schon seit jeher steht Rumänien an der Grenze zwischen Orient und Okzident und wurde zum Schmelztigel unterschiedlichster Einflüsse. Der Brückenschlag von einer teilweise noch archaischen Folklore zu einer avantgardistischen Tonsprache ist eines der Charakteristika zeitgenössischer rumänischer Musik. Unter den vielen Eigenarten, die diese Musiken aufweisen, ist eine besondere innere Kraft deißlich zu spüren. Eines der wesentlichen gemeinsamen Merkmale mag ein anderer Umgang mit der Dimension Zeit sein, in der sich rumänische Komponisten scheinbar freier und ungebundener bewegen.
Fast alle auf dieser CD vereinten Werke sind in den letzten Jahren entstanden und den Interpreten dieser CD gewidmet. Und dieses mag ein Glücksfall sein: Denn selten finden sich Interpreten, die neben glänzender Technik, brillantem Ton und facettenreicher Klangphantasie ein so hohes inneres Verständnis für die interpretierten Werke mitbringen.

Violeta Dinescu (* 1953 / Bukarest)
Studium am Bukarester Konservatorium u.a. bei Myriam Marbe. 1977 Examen in Komposition, Klavier und Pädagogik. Dozentur an der Bukarester George Enescu-Musikschule. 1982 Übersiedlung in die Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Seitdem mehrere Dozenturen für Musiktheorie an den Hochschulen für Kirchenmusik in Heidelberg und Bayreuth sowie an der Musikhochschule Frankfurt. Seit 1996 Professorin für angewandte Komposition an der Universität Oldenburg. Ihr Werk erhielt mehrere internationale Preise und Auszeichnungen.
Euraculos II für Klarinette und Viola wurde durch ein Gedicht von Ion Caraion inspiriert, wobei der Titel des Stückes nicht dem Gedicht entnommen ist, sondern der Name einer imaginären mythologischen Figur ist. Die Musik versucht den Raum zwischen den Zeilen zu suggerieren. So scheinen beide Instrumente in getrennten klanglichen Welten zu existieren, die sich immer wieder überschneiden und gegenseitig assimilieren. Ohne explizit auf die traditionelle rumänische Musik zurückzugreifen, vermitteln die weitgespannten melodischen Bögen das Gefühl einer „Doina", eines sich frei in der Zeit entwickelnden Gesanges.
Dan Dediu (* 1967 / Braila) 1985-89 Studium am Bukarester Konservatorium in den Klassen von Stefan Niculescu und Dan Constantinescu). 1989 Kompositionsexamen. Anschließende Studien an der Wiener Musikhochschule, dort ebenfalls Studium der Philosophie. Seit 1991 Lehrbeauftragter für Komposition und musikalische Analyse am Bukarester Konservatorium. Gastlehrauftrag an der Queen's University, Belfast.
Sepia Girl für Klarinette und Viola (1994) basiert auf verschiedenen kompositionstechnischen Ideen und benützt u.a. mikrotonale Elemente, Tempipolyphonie und ein eigenes Notationssystem, in dem auch der Bogenstrich und der Atemstrom der Interpreten genau festgelegt wird. Trotz der Strenge der Arbeit wirkt das Stück sehr frei. Es evoziert mit sparsamen Mitteln den Eindruck einer durchgehenden, nicht realisierten Melodie, die immer wieder in heterophonen Momenten fetsgehalten wird.
Der Titel suggeriert einen Seelenzustand, der von nostalgischen und melancholischen Impulsen getragen wird.
Aurel Stroe (* 1932 / Bukarest)
Kompositions- und Musikwissenschaftstudium am Bukarester Konservatorium. 1962-75 Dozentur für Orchestration. Ab 1974 Professor für Komposition. Teilnahme an den Ferienkursen in Darmstadt. 1968 Einladung des State-Departments in die USA. Arbeit in verschiedenen Zentren für elektronische und Computermusik. 1972/73 DAAD-Stipendiat. 1985/86 Gastprofessor in Illinois an der Urbana Champagne State University. 1986-94 Kornpositionskurse bei den Ferienkursen in Darmstadt. Lebt seit 1986 als freischaffender Komponist in Mannheim. Auf dem Weg zu Höhenfeuern für Viola solo (1979) ist ein Nachtstück, das von der Faszination lebt, Höhenfeuern, die in der Ferne aufflammen, langsam näher zu kommen. Dieser Eindruck wird durch die Verwendung nichtoktavierter Leitern erreicht. Das Stück durchmißt in einer einzigen Bewegung das Register des Instrumentes von den Tiefen zur Höhe. Das Instrument erfährt durch klangliche „Abweichungen" eine Metamorphose in ein „Bucium", die rumänische Variante des Alphorns.

On y va Fünf Stücke für Klarinette und Viola. Diese Stücke, die eine imaginäre Folklore formulieren wollen, versuchen einen kontinuierlichen Klangraum, der mit mathematischen Gesetzmäßigkeiten kontrapunktiert wird, entstehen zu lassen. Das Ergebnis ist ein Dramolett, in dem die beteiligten Personen ständig ihre Rollen wechseln.
Myriam Marbe (*1931 / Bukarest) Kompositionsstudium am Bukarester Konservatorium in den Klassen von Mihail Jora und Leon Klepper. 1953 Examen. 1954-1988 Zuerst Dozentin, dann Professorin für Harmonielehre, Kontrapunkt und Komposition. Ihr Werk erhielt zahlreiche Auszeichnungen und Preise. 1968, 69 und 72 Darmstädter Ferienkurse. 1971 Teilnahme am Festival in Royan. 1989/90 Arbeitsstipendium der Stadt Mannheim. Seit 1990 lebt sie als freischaffende Komponistin in Haarlem (Niederlande), und Bukarest.
Paos für Klarinette und Viola (1995) gehört zu den Stücken der Komponistin, die in einer Etappe entstanden, in denen Marbe in ihrer Musik eine Zärtlichkeit ausdrücken wollte. Im Allgemeinen zeichnet sich Marbes Musik durch einen Reichtum in der Einfachheit und Reduktion aus. Oft gelingt ihr die perfekte Synthese ursprünglich heterogener Elemente. In Paos wird die Suche nach einer einfachen Melodie durch ein rhythmisches Spiel über einen einzigen Ton, das deutliche Anklänge an das Spiel arabischer Perkussionsinstrumente aufweist, sowie einen Choral in der Richtung beeinflußt.
Tiberiu Olah (*1928 / Arpasel, Bihor)

Pasärea Mäiasträ II (Der verzauberte Vogel) für Klarinette und Band trägt den Untertitel „Rhymes for the Revelation of Time" und ist ein Teil von mehreren Zyklen, die sich mit den Skulpturen des rumänischen Bildhauers Constantin Brancusi auseinandersetzen. Auf der ersten Ebene wird die Sonate solo gespielt. Eine zweite Klangschicht bringt vier verkürzte Überlagerungen derselben Sonate. Durch diese Superpositionen entsteht ein neuer Klangraum, der anscheinend seine eigene Dimension durchbricht.
Anatol Vieru (*1926 / Jasi)
1946-1951 Kompositionsstudium am Bukarester Konservatorium in der Klasse von Leon Klepper. 1951-1954 Kompositionsstudium in Moskau in der Klasse von Aram Chatschaturian. 1955-1958 Doktorand in Moskau. 1955-1986 Professor für Komposition am Bukarester Konservatorium. 1973 DAAD Stipendiat in West-Berlin. 1992/93 Composer-in-residence, New York University. Für seine musikwissenschaftlichen Arbeiten wurde ihm die Ehrendoktorwürde der Universität Bukarest verliehen. Er erhielt zahlreiche internationale Auszeichnungen. Couple für Klarinette und Viola (1995) entstammt einer Serie kleiner Duos für verschiedene Besetzungen, die in den letzten Jahren entstanden. Dieses Werk, das durch eine pure Lust am Komponieren entstanden ist, gestaltet fein gearbeitete mikrotonale Flächen, die immer wieder von synchronisierten Attacken durchbrochen werden.
Cornelia Täutu (*1938 / Odorhei, Harghita)
1960-1965 Pädagogik- und 1963-1967 Kompositionsstudien am Bukarester Konservatorium. 1971/72 Kompositionsstudium an der Long Island University, New York in der Klasse von Raoul Pleskow. Arbeitet am Bukarester Institut für Folklore und Dialektologie.
De Doi für Viola und Klarinette (1994) arbeitet mit figurierten Flächen, die immer wieder in feine Wellenbewegungen überführt werden. Die minimalistisch beeinflußte Musik läßt immer wieder klare Tonzentren erkennen. Obwohl die Musik durchweg originär ist, liefert sie doch zahlreiche Allusionen an die traditionelle Musik Rumäniens.

Die Interpreten
Sanda Cräciun, (*1950). Studierte am Bukarester Konservatorium. Sie ist Bratscherin im Bukarester Philharmonischen Orchester und Mitbegründerin des Ensembles Consortium Violae. Zahlreiche Soloauftritte, Schallplatten, Rundfunk- und Fernsehproduktionen. Seit 1994 mehrere Tourneen durch Westeuropa. Dort Aufnahmen für den SWF, MDR, DRS.
Aurelian Octav Popa (*1937). Studium am Bukarester Konservatorium. Spielte als Solist mit vielen berühmten Sinfonieorchestern in Europa und den USA. Zahlreiche Rundfunkeinspielungen. Preisträger mehrerer internationaler Wettbewerbe u.a. in Prag, Budapest und Genf. Als Dirigent besuchte er Meisterkurse bei Sergiu Celebidache. Seit 1989 ist er ständiger Dirigent der Klassischen Philharmonie Konstanza. Seine Einspielungen erhielten mehrfach Auszeichungen.
