Krzysztof Meyer was born on August 11th, 1943 in Cracow. From the age of five he studied the piano and from 1954 theory and composition with Stanislaw Wiechowicz. After graduating from the Chopin State Secondary School of Music in Cracow Meyer continued his studies at the College of Music in Cracow, graduating with distinction in composition (in the class of Krzysztof Penderecki in 1965) and in theory a year later. In 1964, 1966, and 1968 he studied with Nadia Boulanger in France for several months. From 1965 to 1967 Meyer performed as pianist with the "MW2 Ensemble", giving concerts of contemporary music both in Poland and in many other European countries. He also played his own solo and chamber music compositions. From 1966 to 1987 Krzysztof Meyer taught at the State College of Music (now Academy of Music) in Cracow and was Dean of the Department of Music Theory from 1972 to 1975. Since 1987 he has been professor of composition at the Hochschule fur Musik in Cologne and a frequent lecturer on the subject of contemporary music in many countries, including Russia, Germany, Austria, Brazil and Japan. Between 1985 and 1989 he was President of the Polish Composers' Union.
posers' Krzysztof Meyer is the winner of numerous awards, such as the First Prize at the Competition for Young Composers in France (1966), the Aaron Copland Scholarship (1966), the First Prize for Symphony No. 3 at Fitelberg Competition (1968), the Grand Prix at the Prince Pierre de Monaco International Composers' Competition for his opera Cyberiada (1970). He received the special award of the Tribune Internationale des Compositeurs UNESCO in Paris for String Quartet No. 2 and String Quartet No. 3 in 1970 and 1976. He is also a laureate of the Ministry of Culture Award (1973 and 1975), the First Prize winner of the Karol Szymanowski Competition in Warsaw for Symphony No. 4 (1974) and the recipient of a Special Medal bestowed by the Government of Brazil for his String Quartet No. 4 and Concerto retro (1975 and 1977). Among other distinguished prizes that Krzysztof Meyer has received are the Gottfried-von-Herder-Preis (Vienna, 1984), the Annual Award of the Polish Composers' Union (Warsaw, 1992), the A. Jurzykowski Award (New York, 1993) and the Johann-Stamitz-Preis (Mannheim, 1996). Krzysztof Meyer is a member of the Freie Akademie der Kranste in Mannheim.
Meyer's compositions have been performed all over the world at international festivals of contemporary music, such as the Warsaw Autumn, Musicki Biennale Zagreb, Holland Festival, Musikprotokoll-Graz, Aldeburgh Festival, Schleswig-Holstein and the Lucerne Festival, among others. Some of his works were commissioned by or composed for the most eminent soloists (Lyric Triptych for Peter Pears, the Flute Concerto for Aurele Nicolet, the Concerto da camera per oboe for Lothar Faber, the Pezzo capriccioso for Heinz Holliger, the Violoncello Sonata for David Geringas, Canti Amadei for Ivan Monighetti, the 2nd Violin Concerto for Dmitri Sitkovetsky). Meyer's Symphony No. 1 was one of the three obligatory contemporary compositions at the International Course for Conductors in Monaco directed by Igor Markevich in 1971, as was his Hommage a Johannes Brahms at the Conductors' Competition in Dublin in 1999.
"Duetti concertanti for Bassoon and Piano was written under the spell of the great artistic performance of the `Trio Okazaki'. When I heard them play the Trio for Oboe, Bassoon and Pianio I had composed for them, I was absolutely thrilled. I really wanted to continue working with these wonderful musicians. I offered to write a duet for bassoon and piano and was delighted when Mr. Okazaki was interested. So I wrote an expansive five-movement cycle. Each movement is of a different musical character where the bassoon can demonstrate its versatility. The duet was conceived, considering all instrumental possibilities of the bassoon and the piano; it is a challenging and complex piece of music but, as I hope, also a piece the musicians like.
The Sonata per flauti soli was composed in 1980 and is in two movements. The first is a calmly lyrical, cantabile movement that includes a virtuoso climax in its central section; this is followed by a multifarious Presto movement. The first section develops out of the opening movement in a distinctive motif based around the note 'g', to which the music returns several times. After the virtuoso outburst of the central section, which is based on the note `c', the music returns to the lyrical nature of the opening, thus rounding off the formal shape and musical character of the movement.
The Presto movement is dominated almost throughout by the biting timbre of the piccolo and a short staccato motif built around the highest octave and closes with further downward leaping octave jumps. The rondo-type structure of this Presto derives from the mostly stanzaic — interludes in which the tempo is also often reduced. The movement ends with a drawn-out epilogue in which the musical material and the characteristic timbre of the alto flute hark back to the very opening of the Sonata. The two movements of the composition are thus forged into a single formal arch.
The Metamorphoses for Alto Saxophone and Piano were written in 2004 to express my gratitude to John-Edward Kelly who ten years before had been the first to perform my saxophone concert and since then had been playing it regularly in several countries. The ten-minute miniature, which evolves gradually from the central note 'b' and returns to it towards the end, is a sort of "practice work" in which I further develop my harmonic system. This piece was first performed on 24 February 2005 in Vienna by its dedicatee John-Edward Kelly.
The Trio for Oboe, Bassoon and Piano was conceived under the impression of the great artistic performance of the Japanese ensemble 'Trio Okazaki'. When these musicians suggested that I compose a piece for them I wrote a trio with just under 20 minutes in length, consisting of three contrasting movements. The first movement in moderate tempo is of constantly changing dynamics, character and pace. The culmination shortly before its end wants to convey to the listener the idea of 'non-completion' of form — anticipation of what lies ahead. The second movement, which in the dramaturgy of this trio is central, more drawn out and extremely slow, first brings widespread melodic lines. A development that is increasingly gaining momentum is seen to happen only after some time: the motifs are less cantabile and rougher and the piano part initially based on simple chords is getting more and more complex. During the second half the music reaches a dramatic climax which is followed by a gradual diminuendo that returns bit by bit to the serenity and cantability seen at the beginning of the movement. The third movement is a virtuoso perpetuum mobile which constitutes some sort of postscript to the dramaturgy of the music heard before. Here some allusions to the beginning of the piece are found which, however, recede soon and make room for fast runs of the three instruments."


ZUSÄTZLICHE INFORMATIONEN

Krzysztof Meyer wurde am 11. August 1943 in Krakau geboren. Seit seinem fünften Lebensjahr lernte er Klavierspielen und nahm dann ab 1954 Unterricht in Theorie und Komposition bei Stanistaw Wiechowicz. Nachdem er die Chopin-Musikschule in Krakau absolviert hatte, studierte er an der dortigen Musikhochschule, wo er zwei Studiengänge mit Auszeichnung abschloss: 1965 erhielt er sein Diplom in Komposition bei Krzysztof Penderecki (nach Wiechowiczs Tod) und 1966 sein Diplom in Musiktheorie. In den Jahren 1964, 1966 und 1968 studierte er jeweils für einige Monate in Frankreich bei Nadia Boulanger.
Von 1965 bis 1967 trat er als Pianist im „Ensemble für zeitgenössische Musik MW2" auf und konzertierte in Polen sowie in vielen anderen europäischen Ländern. Außerdem spielte er als Solist seine eigenen Kompositionen.
Von 1966 bis 1987 unterrichtete Krzysztof Meyer musiktheoretische Fächer an der Staatlichen Musikhochschule (derzeit Musikakademie) in Krakau und stand von 1972 bis 1975 dem Institut für Musiktheorie und Komposition als Dekan vor. Seit 1987 ist er Professor an der Musikhochschule in Köln, wo er eine Meisterklasse für Komposition leitet. Bei ihm studieren nicht nur junge Musiker aus Deutschland sondern auch aus anderen Ländern Europas und aus Nord- und Südamerika.
Meyer hielt im In- und Ausland zahlreiche Vorlesungen über neue Musik (in der Sowjetunion, in Ost- und Westdeutschland, Österreich und Brasilien). Von 1985 bis 1989 war er Vorsitzender des Polnischen Komponistenverbandes und Mitorganisator des Festivals „Warschauer Herbst".
Krzysztof Meyer wurden zahlreiche Kompositionspreise zuerkannt: der 1. Preis beim Wettbewerb junger Komponisten in Frankreich (1966), das Aaron Copland Stipendium (1966), 1. Preis (1968 für 3. Sinfonie) beim Fitelberg-Kompositionswettbewerb, Grand Prix Prince Pierre de Monaco (1970 für die Oper Kyberiade), eine zweimalige Sonderauszeichnung der Tribune Internationale des Compositeurs UNESCO in Paris (1970 und 1976 für das zweite bzw. dritte Streichquartett), zweimaliger Preis des Kultusministeriums (1973 und 1975), der 1. Preis beim Warschauer Karol-Szymanowski-Wettbewerb (1974 für die 4. Sinfonie), die zweimalige Medaille der Brasilianischen Regierung (1975 und 1977 für das 4. Streichquartett bzw. für Concerto retro), der Gottfried-von-Herder-Preis (Wien, 1984), der Preis des Polnischen Komponistenverbandes (Warschau, 1992), der Alfred-Jurzykowski-Preis (New York, 1993) und der Johann-Stamitz-Preis (Mannheim 1996). Meyer ist Mitglied der Freien Akademie der Künste in Mannheim.
Krzysztof Meyers Kompositionen wurden in Europa und in Amerika bei bedeutenden internationalen Musikfestivals aufgeführt - beispielsweise „Warschauer Herbst", „Musicki Biennale Zagreb", „Holland Festival", „Musikprotokoll-Graz", „Aldeburgh Festival", „Schleswig-Holstein" und „Luzern Festival". Manche Werke (darunter einige Auftragswerke) entstanden für bedeutende Interpreten: das Flötenkonzert für Aurele Nicolet, das Concerto da camera per oboe für Lothar Faber, das Pezzo capriccioso für Heinz Holliger, das Violinkonzert für Dmitri Sitkovetsky, das Cellokonzert für Boris Pergamenschikow, die Cellosonate und Monolog für David Geringas, Canti Amadei für Ivan Monighetti, Lyric Triptych für Peter Pears). 1991-92 war er „composer in residence" bei der Kölner Philharmonie, 1996 „composer in residence" in Seattle. Meyers 1. Sinfonie war eines der drei zeitgenössischen Pflichtstücke beim Internationalen Dirigentenwettbewerb, den Igor Markevich 1971 in Monaco leitete. Auch Hommage ä Johannes Brahms war eines der drei zeitgenössischen Pflichtstücke beim Internationalen Dirigentenwettbewerb in Dublin (1999).
„Duetti concertanti für Fagott und Klavier schrieb ich unter dem intensiven Eindruck der großen Interpretationskunst des „Trio Okazaki". Als ich vor zwei Jahren die Darbietung des für sie komponierten Trios für Oboe, Fagott und Klavier hörte, war ich davon begeistert. Ich wollte mit diesen hervorragenden Musikern sehr gern weiter zusammenarbeiten. Ich schlug ihnen ein Duett für Fagott und Klavier vor und freute mich sehr, als Herr Okazaki Interesse daran zeigte. Und so schrieb ich ein neues Werk, einen ausgreifenden fünfteiligen Zyklus. In jedem der Sätze hat die Musik einen anderen Charakter und das Fagott zeigt sich jeweils von einer anderen Seite. Dieses Stück entstand im Gedanken an die instrumentalen Möglichkeiten von Fagott und Klavier; es ist mit Sicherheit schwierig und komplex, aber, wie ich hoffe, auch dankbar für die Interpreten.
Die im Jahre 1980 komponierte Sonata per flauti soli ist zweisätzig. Auf den gelassen atmenden kantablen ersten Satz, der allerdings im Mittelteil virtuos crescendiert, folgt ein vielfältig gegliederter Presto-Satz. Aus dem um den Ton ,g' zentrierten Motiv entwickelt sich in mehreren Ansätzen ein erster Formteil. Nach einem virtuos ausbrechenden Mittelteil mit dem Basiston 'c' kehrt die Musik zum kantablen Beginn zurück und rundet so den Satz in Form und Charakter ab.
Der scharfe Ton der Piccoloflöte und ein kurzes Staccato-Motiv nachschlagender Oktaven, das mit einem herabschlagenden Oktavgang endet, beherrscht den Presto-Satz nahezu bis zuletzt. Die rondoartige Gliederung des Presto wird durch Zwischensätze inszeniert, die diese Musik strophenartig strukturieren und im Tempo zurücknehmen. Mit einem langgezogenen Epilog schließt dieser Satz, dessen Motive und Ton (Alt-Flöte) an den Beginn der Sonate erinnern. So fügt sich die zweisätzige Sonate zuletzt zu einem großen Formbogen.
Die im Jahre 2004 entstandenen Metamorphosen für Alt-Saxophon und Klavier schrieb ich als „kleines Dankeschön" für John-Edward Kelly, der zehn Jahre zuvor mein Saxophon-Konzert aus der Taufe gehoben und seitdem regelmäßig in mehreren Ländern aufgeführt hatte. Die zehnminütige, sich graduell aus dem Zentralton ,b' entwickelnde und am Ende zu diesem zurückkehrende Miniatur ist eine Art „Übungswerk", in dem ich mein harmonisches System weiterentwickle. Die Metamorphosen wurden am 24. Februar 2005 in Wien von ihrem Widmungstrager John-Edward Kelly uraufgeführt.
Das Trio fur Oboe, Fagott und Klavier schrieb ich im Fr0hjahr 2002 unter dem Eindruck der großen k0nstlerischen Leistung des japanischen Ensembles „Trio Okazaki", das ich in einer Einspielung gehört hatte. Als diese Musiker sich an mich wandten und vorschlugen, etwas für sie zu komponieren, nahm ich ihren Vorschlag freudig auf und machte mich gleich ans Schreiben. So entstand ein knapp 20-minutiges Trio aus drei kontrastierenden Sätzen. Der erste Satz, in mäßigem Grundtempo, ist geprägt von ständigem Wechsel in Dynamik, Charakter und Tempo. Die Kulmination kurz vor seinem Ende mochte beim Hörer einen Eindruck von 'Nicht Vollendung' der Form hervorrufen — eine Erwartung auf das Kommende. Der in der Dramaturgie dieses Trios zentrale, weiter ausgreifende und extrem langsame zweite Satz bringt zunächst weitgespannte melodische Linien. Erst nach einer gewissen Zeit zeichnet sich eine Entwicklung ab, die zunehmend an Tempo gewinnt: die Motive werden weniger gesanglich, rauer, und der eigentlich auf einfachen Akkorden basierende Klavierpart wird zunehmend komplexer. In der zweiten Hälfte erreicht die Musik einen dramatischen Hohepunkt und danach führt ein allmähliches Diminuendo nach und nach zur Ruhe und Sanglichkeit des Satzbeginns zurück. Der dritte Satz ist ein virtuoses Perpetuum Mobile und bildet gleichsam ein Postskriptum zur Dramaturgie der zuvor gehörten Musik. Im Finalsatz tauchen auch bestimmte Anspielungen auf den Beginn des Werkes auf, sie treten aber bald zurück und geben raschen Laufen aller drei Instrumente Raum."
